How to remove a background in 3 steps

Open a photo and choose its subject type
Choose People & pets or Objects & products to match the image. The required model downloads when the tool is used.
Remove and refine
Preview the automatic cutout. Use Keep and Erase brushes on the Before view to correct missed areas or unwanted background.
Export with transparency
Choose PNG or another format that supports transparency. Inspect fine edges against different backgrounds, then download.

Get cleaner cutouts around hair, fur and products

Subject type affects the model used for the cutout. Portrait matting is designed for people; pets and unusual poses can be harder. Fine fur, transparent objects and low-contrast edges may require manual strokes. Start with a clear image where the subject is distinguishable from its surroundings.

Know the limits

Subject type matters: portrait matting is designed for people, while object removal handles products. Pet results vary with pose and background. Fine edges, transparent objects and low-contrast areas may still need refinement. Maximum source: 16 megapixels.

Private image editing on your device

Your images are opened and processed in your browser, not uploaded to a server. The website downloads the code and assets it needs to run, and some tools download a processing model. Those requests do not contain the photos you open. Download your results before closing the page; working images are not kept between visits.

Are photos sent to an AI server?

No. The model and processing runtime download to your browser; the photo is processed on your device.

Why does a JPG have a solid background?

JPG cannot keep transparency. Export PNG to preserve the cutout or deliberately choose a solid replacement background.

Can I correct an imperfect result?

Yes. Keep and Erase brushes let you refine the mask. Results still depend on the original image, and the maximum source size is 16 megapixels.
